With the gorge
By Hanna-Katrina Jedrosz
"The Radovna River courses through the Vintgar Gorge in the Julian Alps in Slovenia. It is difficult to hold a river back. Water moves onwards and takes up space, bringing elements and beings together, and also drawing them apart. Since I was a child I have been frightened to swim where I cannot see the riverbed.
This image was photographed whilst making a major body of work about the European Green Belt, which is an area of national parks and nature reserves that run along the former Iron Curtain border across Europe from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea. The project began shortly after the referendum in 2016, and has taken shape in the time since. Photographing the peoples and lands of the European Green Belt has felt like a quietly political act. There is a strange dance between political-economic events and the environment. The result of the EU referendum, and the history of the Iron Curtain, have both been a shape-shifting presence throughout."
