Mirror - Lake Como, Italy 2017
This image is an outtake from a series titled ‘La Femmina’; a portrait series photographing women in Italy from the Swiss/Italian Alps, down to the Amalfi Coast. It was an exploration of the female gaze in response to classical Italian portraiture of women in art - especially those depictions created during the Renaissance. Portraiture such as Sandro Botticelli’s the Fortitude and Venus, representative of the male gaze and the expectations of female character and beauty by men.
As a woman, I wanted to photograph women of all ages, sizes, ethnicities and cultures - both visitors like me - and locals. But in between those portraits, I also found objects and/or details that resonated with me this sense of the female - both physically and metaphorically.
