Me & Mum, Rome 1988
£310.00 - £510.00
I’m celebrating International Women’s Day by remembering the amazing woman who brought me up, my mother Sue Miles. She was the first female head chef running a major restaurant in the UK and the first to have an all female kitchen staff, she championed women all her life, especially within the very male dominated world of restaurants in the 1970s & 80s.
When I was eight years old we moved to Rome for her new chef job, we stayed two years, it was the most fantastic experience, I will always thank her for taking that risk. Within this image is a Polaroid image, taken on my first ever camera, of us at our favorite Gelato cafe on top of a hill in Rome. It’s shown in front of all her beautiful old recipes books I have inherited. The image is part of my series A Stranger in My Mother’s Kitchen, an exploration of the grieving process, she died in 2010 aged 66. This body of work will be published as a book later this year.
