Café in Silesia
By Hanna-Katrina Jędrosz
"This photograph forms part of a series called I Feel Every Stone of the Road, which was inspired by the experiences of my Polish grandmother who fought in the Second World War against the Nazi occupation of Poland. As a teenager she was a member of the underground movement and was part of a battalion in the Home Army. This image was taken during a my attempt to retrace her steps across Poland and Germany where she had been held in Prisoner of War camps after the Warsaw Uprising and capitulation in '44. The story as a whole entirely changed my perception of landscape and place. I tried to peer backwards in time, to locate the threads of her experiences in everything that had happened since, in the steady growth of new life which has overgrown the foundations."
